On Sunday, February 24, 2019, President Trump announced that he will be postponing the scheduled Section 301 tariff increase from 10 percent to 25 percent on $200 billion worth of imported Chinese products due to “substantial progress” in ongoing trade negotiations between the two countries. The tariff increase was originally scheduled for this Saturday, March 2, 2019. We cannot confirm that this will occur because the postponement is not official until the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) publishes an announcement in the Federal Register. Additionally, no new date for the proposed tariff increase has been provided. The announcement via social media was made in the context of ongoing trade negotiations involving USTR Robert Lighthizer, Secretary of the Treasury Stephen Mnuchin, and Vice Premier Liu He of China.
